The design is based on maximising the spectacular views on
the Hauraki Gulf while still providing shelter from the prevailing
winds on Waiheke Island.
Two angled wings of steel and glass cantilever past a radius
edge of decking and pool. These wings act as buffers to the
wind and create three outdoor living areas. The transparency
of glass compliments the solid walls that anchor the house
back into the bank.
A curbed loop is central to the design. An apparent seemless
edge is created with a cantilevered glass edge containing
the water.
The entrance is located between double garages at an upper
level. Step lead down to the central dining area where spectacular
views unfold beneath a floating curved roof.
The cantilevered living room wing is angled to the west and
views of the city. To the east, behind the kitchen, the main
bedroom wing looks out towards Rakino island.
Either side of the stairs are two study/ sleeping areas with
two further bedrooms that open out to the eastern and western
terraces.
Neutral colours are used so as not to distract from the views.
Grey coloured plaster, zincalume roofing., Tasmanian oak flooring
and weathered hardwood decking. The view is framed with silver
anodised joinery between white structural steel.
